Synopsis
Dr. Kenzou Tenma, a gifted neurosurgeon destined to become the hospital director's son-in-law, enjoys a promising career until he faces a harrowing choice: operate on a renowned performer or a dying immigrant laborer. Choosing the laborer leads to the patient's death and ignites a deep ethical struggle within Tenma. Years later, a similar predicament arises when he must choose between saving a young boy named Johan Liebert or the local mayor. Despite losing his status and facing severe professional consequences, Tenma remains steadfast in his decision to save the child. Following the mysterious deaths of the hospital director and two other doctors, Tenma is exonerated and eventually rises to become the director himself. Nine years after that fateful surgery, Tenma's past resurfaces while treating a criminal, revealing that the patient was once the child he saved, Johan Liebert. Overwhelmed by guilt, Tenma embarks on a relentless journey to undo the devastation wrought by the life he chose to preserve.
