Summary
Hailing from Munich, this blind elder had a prior acquaintance with Johan during the boy’s youth. He voluntarily shared insights with Dr. Tenma, describing Johan as a fascinating child who held him in high regard. The old man explained that Johan viewed him as more significant than his own parents, largely because he had saved Johan’s life. Regarding Franz, the elder noted that he resided with the Haynau family from March 1987 through April 1988. He characterized Franz as both intelligent and polite, noting that he rapidly mastered English and French under the old man’s guidance. Franz was particularly entertained by the elder’s war anecdotes, especially the story of surviving an Allied Destroyer attack on a U-boat. This interest stemmed from Franz’s fascination with human behavior near death and the fear it evokes. The old man observed that Franz kept his heart closed to everyone except his sister. When Dr. Tenma mentioned he was searching for the boy’s twin sister, the elder revealed that Franz intended to retrieve her when she turned twenty in Heidelberg.
