Mrs. Jones

Summary

Mr. and Mrs. Jones are an elderly English couple who appear during a segment in which Dr. Kenzo Tenma and Dieter attempt to hitch a ride to Freiham. Following Mr. Jones' retirement from his career as a police officer, the pair is ostensibly on vacation in Germany. Although Mr. Jones is initially reluctant, his wife Leia convinces him to stop and pick up the two men stranded by the roadside. After their vehicle runs out of fuel and Tenma departs with Dieter to find assistance, the couple is surprised when the men return several hours later with borrowed jerry cans. The group later shares a meal at a restaurant, where Tenma suggests they order a bottle of ungeheuer wine. Unlike his perceptive wife, Mr. Jones harbors deep suspicion toward Tenma, relying on his instincts as a former detective in a manner similar to Inspector Lunge. This doubt is challenged when the group detours to visit Steinbach Castle. Mr. Jones shares a tragic family history, revealing that their son Robert once wrote enthusiastically about the castle’s beauty in a letter, but later confessed to murdering someone at that very location. After parting ways with Tenma and Dieter, the couple travels to Stadelheim Prison in Munich to visit Robert. Before entering, Mr. Jones admits to Leia that he had already deduced Tenma was a fugitive during their earlier encounter at a police station, yet he maintains a belief in Tenma’s innocence, driven by his own desire to believe in his son’s innocence.
