In the wake of discovering the truth about their father's death, the Shimogamo brothers settle into quieter routines, each honoring his memory in their own way. Yaichirou, the eldest, aims to become the next Trick Magister and lead the tanuki community, starting by reviving a famous shogi tournament. Yajirou focuses on regaining his shapeshifting abilities, while Yashirou finds contentment managing the family factory. Yasaburou, the third brother, chooses to live freely, embracing his father's wild spirit by hunting the elusive tsuchinoko and stirring up trouble.
This peace is broken by the return of Nidaime, the estranged son of their tengu mentor, Professor Akadama. Bearing deep resentment toward both his father and Akadama's student, Benten, Nidaime's arrival threatens the delicate balance among humans, tengu, and tanuki. Yasaburou navigates the growing tension, using his tanuki cunning to calm all sides and prevent the situation from descending into chaos.
