Synopsis
In a world covered by an endless desert, the Mud Whale—a floating island vessel—travels across this vast expanse. The island is home to an ancient community where many residents, called the "Marked," possess supernatural abilities but suffer shortened lifespans due to this power. Among them is Chakuro, the village archivist, who dedicates himself to recording the discovery of new islands. Each new island he finds, however, is similar to the others: deserted, with only faint traces of former inhabitants. After a six-month gap, another island appears on the horizon, prompting Chakuro to join a scouting expedition with his companions. During their exploration, they come across relics from a vanished society. Inside a deteriorating building, Chakuro encounters a girl whose presence will change his destiny and the course of life on the Mud Whale.
