Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau

Within the Mud Whale—an immense vessel drifting across an endless sea of sand—its society is split into two clear classes: the Marked, who can use a power called thymia but have shortened lifespans, and the Unmarked, who lack that ability, live normal lives, and hold authority. Chakuro, a 14-year-old archivist with hypergraphia, carefully records every event occurring on the island and in unknown lands. While on an expedition to a remote island, Chakuro meets a girl suffering from amnesia. She tries to attack him before collapsing. He rescues her and takes her onto the Mud Whale, where her appearance confuses everyone because they have never encountered outsiders before. Her combat skills and emotional distance suggest a background very different from that of the Mud Whale's inhabitants. The arrival of this mysterious girl, whom they name Lykos, reveals to Chakuro the realities existing beyond their floating home, setting him on an unforeseen journey.

Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau ranked 10th on Kono Manga ga Sugoi!'s top 20 manga for female readers list in 2015. In 2017, the manga was nominated for the 21st Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau was published in English as Children of the Whales by VIZ Media under the VIZ Signature imprint from November 21, 2017 to February 20, 2024. It has also been published in French by Glénat Editions; in German by Carlsen Comics; in Italian by Star Comics; and in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones. A Japanese stage play adaptation based on the series premiered in April 2016.
