Following a devastating family tragedy that leaves Tooru Honda homeless and camping in a tent, she finds solace in the Chinese zodiac tales her late mother used to tell. Unaware of the property boundaries, she inadvertently pitches her tent on land belonging to the Souma family. By chance, she encounters Shigure, an elder Souma relative, and Yuki, a popular student from her school. Initially assuming she lives in the neighborhood, they are surprised to discover the truth when they spot her returning to her tent one evening. The Souma family extends a helping hand by inviting Tooru to live with them, significantly improving her circumstances. However, her new existence takes a bizarre turn when she stumbles upon a heated argument between Yuki and his fiery cousin, Kyou. While attempting to intervene, Tooru uncovers the Souma family's profound secret: its members transform into the animals of the Chinese zodiac when embraced by someone of the opposite sex. Now aware of this truth, Tooru embarks on a unique and frequently comedic chapter of her life, navigating friendship, romance, and the complexities of her newfound family.

A year has passed since Tooru Honda joined the Souma household in the second season of Fruits Basket. Over this time, she has drawn nearer to Shigure, Kyou, and Yuki while forging connections with other family members. Tooru delves deeper into the Soumas' ancient secret, aiding them as they confront their personal struggles. Yet, as her bond with the family strengthens, she starts to suspect that the concealed truth is far more sinister than she first imagined. When summer arrives, Tooru is invited to spend her days with the Soumas, particularly Kyou and Yuki. While she hopes for a relaxing vacation, her deep ties to these boys and the wider family may bring complications. Amidst increasing closeness, their peaceful moments are interrupted by unresolved issues and resurfacing past emotions. The approaching Eternal Banquet further complicates things, requiring the zodiac members to fulfill their duties under the watchful eye of the ominous Akito Souma. With the banquet nearing and many emotions demanding attention, Tooru must face the possibility that her life with the Soumas might not remain tranquil but could instead trap her in an inescapable dilemma.
