Rurouni Kenshin

Synopsis

As the Bakumatsu period drew to a close and the Meiji Restoration began, the feared assassin Hitokiri Battousai vanished, leaving a trail of terror and bloodshed behind. Years later, a quiet wanderer named Kenshin Himura crosses paths with Kaoru Kamiya, who runs a struggling dojo in Tokyo. Kaoru is hunting a man posing as the Battousai, a murderer targeting civilians and police officers alike. This impostor also claims to wield the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, a sword style created by Kaoru's father, built on the principle of protecting life rather than taking it. Kenshin helps Kaoru defeat the fake Battousai and restore her father's dojo. Unbeknownst to others, Kenshin himself is the real Battousai, still inspiring fear in those who remember his bloody past. Despite learning this truth, Kaoru is moved by Kenshin's vow to protect the weak without killing, and she allows him to stay at her dojo. However, Kenshin's resolve is tested by lingering threats from his dark history and new dangers emerging in the present.

Background

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (2023) is a remake of the original adaptation, utilizing new animation technology to make it appealing to both new viewers and returning audiences of the series. Supplementary modifications were also made to bring a more serious tone and depth to the story. The anime was released on Blu-ray and DVD in eight volumes by Aniplex from October 25, 2023, to May 29, 2024.
