Summary

Kenshin Himura, widely recognized by the monikers Hitokiri Battousai or Himura the Battousai, serves as the protagonist of the anime series Rurouni Kenshin. Born Shinta on June 20, 1849, his early life was marked by tragedy when cholera claimed his parents. Orphaned at a young age, he was taken in by three slave women traveling in a wagon, but they were slaughtered by bandits who also targeted the child. He was saved by Seijuro Hiko, who subsequently adopted him. Recognizing that Shinta was ill-suited for the life of a swordswoman, Hiko renamed him Kenshin, which translates to Heart of Sword, and initiated him into the Hiten Mitsuruugi Ryu techniques. A decade later, Kenshin appears as a wandering swordsman dedicated to aiding those in distress. After traveling extensively across Japan from Kyoto, he settles in Tokyo, where the series begins, steadfastly adhering to his vow never to kill again. It is in Tokyo that he encounters Kaoru Kamiya, an event that sets his life on a new trajectory. Portrayed as a carefree and somewhat simple-minded individual regarding everyday life, he maintains an aloof demeanor. To repay Kaoru for hosting him, he diligently performs chores around her dojo, such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry, though he eventually develops romantic feelings for her. Despite his gentle nature, Kenshin possesses elite swordsmanship skills, consistently defeating his rivals and displaying exceptional battle sense, with the sole exception of a draw against Hajime Saitou.
