Summary

Hajime Saitou draws loose inspiration from the historical third-squad captain of the Shinsengumi, having later lived as a police officer named Gorou Fujita during the Meiji era. Within the Rurouni Kenshin series, he serves as Kenshin’s formidable rival and adversary from the Bakumatsu period. Saitou operates without compassion or mercy, adhering strictly to the Shinsengumi code "Aku Soku Zan (悪即斬)," which translates literally to "Slay Evil Immediately" and is more poetically interpreted as "Swift Death To Evil." His signature combat style is the Gatotsu, a left-handed thrust that constitutes a variation of the Hirazuki technique. This method was originally developed by Toshizou Hijikata, the Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi. While the Gatotsu is a fictional creation exclusive to the Rurouni Kenshin narrative, the underlying Hirazuki technique was a real method employed by numerous members of the Shinsengumi.
