Ippo Makunouchi has successfully claimed the Japanese featherweight championship, and his daily life has settled into a comfortable pattern surrounded by supportive friends and his coach. His relationship with Kumi Mashiba continues to deepen, and she enjoys the time they spend together. Yet just as Ippo revels in his victory, a new challenger appears: Kazuki Sanada, a doctor who works alongside Kumi. Sanada is known for his tactical style of boxing, using his medical knowledge to outmaneuver opponents. In addition to his strategic prowess, he has also earned the affection of the hospital’s nursing staff, which adds another layer of complication for Ippo. As the reigning champion, Ippo must prepare to defend his title against this formidable foe while also pursuing his romantic interests.

In "Fighting Spirit: Mashiba vs. Kimura," Tatsuya Kimura grows increasingly frustrated as his friends Ippo Makunouchi and Mamoru Takamura claim championship titles while he himself fails to win Japan’s Junior Lightweight boxing crown, causing him deep distress. As he prepares for his upcoming bout against reigning champion Ryo Mashiba, Kimura intensifies his training with guidance from Ippo's rival, Ichirou Miyata, who previously suffered defeat against Mashiba's deadly "Hitman" style. Meanwhile, Mashiba is fiercely determined to keep his championship belt, driven by his goal of capturing the World title and securing a more stable life for his sister, Kumi. The central question remains: can Kimura’s burning need to prove his worth as a boxer overcome Mashiba’s urgent desire to improve Kumi’s circumstances?
