Summary
Ippo Makunouchi serves as the central protagonist of the series, residing in Tokyo with his mother, Hiroko Makunouchi, and assisting with the family’s charter fishing boat business alongside their pet, Wanpo. Born on November 23, 1973, he stands at 164 cm with a reach of 165 cm, competing in the Featherweight division with a weight limit of 126 pounds. His fighting style is that of an infighter utilizing a Peek-A-Boo approach under the guidance of his trainer, Genji Kamogawa, at the Kamogawa Boxing Gym. Ippo’s boxing career began after he endured bullying throughout his school years. Following a rescue by Takamura, he was introduced to Kamogawa Gym, where his explosive punching power became evident. Inspired by watching a video of Mike Tyson, Ippo sought to feel reborn through the strength of boxing, quickly proving his worth to both Takamura and Kamogawa to embark on his professional path. His signature strikes include a liver blow, a Gazelle Punch, and the Dempsey Roll, along with variations such as the Anti-Anti Dempsey Roll and the "New Evolved" Dempsey Roll. These techniques are modeled after the styles of Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson, and Jack Dempsey, respectively. His professional debut was against Oda Yusuke, a boxer widely viewed as lazy and unmotivated. Tension existed between them from the start due to a misunderstanding where Oda believed Ippo had mocked him. The conflict intensified when Ippo’s girlfriend threatened to end their relationship, prompting him to commit fully to his training. During the match, Ippo initially held the advantage but was nearly defeated by a cut that required his coach’s intervention. He ultimately secured victory by knocking Oda out with a flurry of jabs.
