In the contemporary setting of "Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei," Nozomu Itoshiki, a high school teacher, experiences profound despair over minor setbacks, sometimes leading to suicide attempts. This satirical and comedic series explores different aspects of Japanese life and culture through Nozomu's interactions with his students. Among them are Kiri Komori, a reclusive student who never leaves the school grounds; Abiru Kobushi, a mysterious figure often seen with inexplicable injuries; and the overly optimistic Kafuuka Fuura, a stark contrast to Nozomu. The show also features several other eccentric young women, each as unique as their teacher.

In "Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei," Nozomu Itoshiki—known as Zetsubou-sensei and the world's most pessimistic person—continues his struggle to teach class 2-F that life is full of despair and hopelessness. This task proves unexpectedly difficult because of his students' unique traits, including an extremely optimistic girl, a dedicated stalker, a foreign exchange student with multiple personalities, and a perfectionist who acts as class president in place of the invisible true president. These and other unusual characters make his job especially challenging.
