Summary

Meru Otonashi is an extremely shy girl who refuses to speak, communicating exclusively through text messages on her cell phone. Despite her timid nature, her emails are notably and viciously abusive. Her surname, Otonashi, translates to "soundless," while her given name is derived from the loan word for "mail." Her email address is "hazukashigariyasan," meaning "full of shyness," and her father affectionately calls her "MeruMeru." Aside from a few weak sounds and squeaks, she is effectively mute; any attempt to speak results in her uncontrollably sputtering in a horrific language. Her family appears to be ridiculously wealthy, as her father can arrange auditions for people to try and dub her voice in real time. In the anime adaptation, her voice actress changes every episode and is selected at random, credited with at most a short sequence of nonsense characters. The exception is episode six of Zoku, where she is voiced by Chiwa Saito.
