Summary

Maria, who is also known by the nickname Mataro given by Kafuka, is an illegal immigrant of unknown nationality. She attends school under the identity of Sekiutsu Tarou, a male student whose birth certificate she purchased. The name Sekiutsu Tarou is a play on words derived from the phrase seki-uttarō, which translates to either "You sold your own register, didn't you?" or "I'll sell you my register." While she refers to herself as Maria, most others use this name as well. She is fascinated by the abundance of Japan and has a habit of hoarding food and refuse she finds on the ground or in garbage cans. Although she frequently displays wild behavior and a strong aversion to wearing panties and shoes, her impoverished appearance and illegal status, combined with a bright smile, often encourage people to give her things. Despite her legal status as a boy due to the purchased certificate, she is actually a girl. Her optimistic personality allows her to get along quite well with Kafuka.
