Bobby's Girl
Finished
6.0

The title's "Bobby" is actually Akihiko Nomura, a 17-year-old high school underachiever with a deep love of motorcycles. His grades are failing; his traditional, strict father—who must have eventually caved and allowed the bike—tries everything to make him apply to college. His mother is so silent she might as well not exist. His only real support is his twinkle-toed, nosy little sister, who cheers him on in her own way. Bobby does little besides work on his bike: cleaning it, tuning it, riding it. You could call him a motorcycle otaku. His latest accomplishment is having photos of himself from a road trip appear in a motorcyclist hobby magazine. That leads to an unexpected development—a girl his age, who picked up the issue on a whim, writes him a letter. It's long and rambling, but dreamily romantic all the same. Bobby tells his sister he's never received a letter from a girl before. He writes back, "I got your letter. I'm happy 'cause it was from a girl." Bobby isn't a well-rounded kid. He barely speaks, even to his own family, and his replies to the mystery girl are usually just a single sentence or so. His motorcycle obsession is so all-consuming that he happily quits school to work at a biker bar. Of course, his father, at a loss, kicks him out of the house. While staying with a friend, he's overjoyed when his female pen pal says she'll call him. That day, his boss at the bar decides to take him to a motocross track. But it's a day that ends in a way no one would expect.
