In a version of 1996 that never was, humanity has achieved long-distance space travel and established colonies on the Moon and Mars. The Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union continues to intensify, with both superpowers building military installations in space while the threat of nuclear war looms over Earth and its off-world settlements.
A United Nations project aimed at fostering peace through cultural exchange is scheduled to begin on Mars. The "Cosmic Culture Club," a group of sixteen teenagers and their teacher Elizabeth, arrives at the UN facility there. Among them is Anna, a fourteen-year-old who serves as the narrator.
Without warning, four unidentified humanoid robots—called Super Powered Tracers—erupt into fierce combat nearby. The UN base is caught in the crossfire and destroyed, leaving only six members of the Cosmic Culture Club alive: Elizabeth, Arthur, Roan, David, Simone, and Anna. Stranded in the middle of a war zone, these survivors witness the battle's conclusion as one of the SPTs lands close to them. Its hatch opens, and the pilot declares, "Earth is at stake."
