Giovanni resides on the outskirts of a small rural town, where his mother is confined to bed due to illness, and his father has been absent since departing for work on a fishing boat. As an outsider at school, Giovanni finds comfort in his friendship with Campanella, whose father serves as the mayor. During the town’s Festival of Stars, Giovanni drifts into a daydream on a hill and notices a steam locomotive floating through the sky. He boards the train, discovering that Campanella is already on board. Together, they journey through the cosmos, encountering unusual travelers and exploring beautiful yet mysterious landscapes.

Background

Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru is based on the 1934 classic children's story by the esteemed author Kenji Miyazawa. The movie won the Oofuji Noburou Award at the Mainichi Film Awards in 1985.
