KyoAni’s ‘New Era’: First-Time Director Ōta on Building Sparks of Tomorrow

Kyoto Animation is framing summer’s Sparks of Tomorrow as more than a comeback title — it’s a production stress test for a studio known for keeping talent, craft, and risk in the same room. In fresh interviews timed to the series’ global rollout, first-time series director Minoru Ōta and longtime producer Satori Senami describe how the house that built Violet Evergarden and Sound! Euphonium is treating this steampunk original as a deliberate leap into a “new frontier.”

Ōta, a veteran key animator and episode director who has been on the project for roughly four years, says he stepped up for the chair because the show was KyoAni’s first fully new property in years and needed bold visuals and direction. Studio culture is the real headline: nearly every staffer works across productions, and core teams share a single floor so ideas can be stress-tested mid-storyboard without blowing the schedule — the kind of shop-floor agility that let them chase impressionist-inspired backgrounds without losing character clarity.

That gamble shows on screen. Alternate-history Kyoto, choked in steam instead of electricity, demanded painterly backgrounds that still read in motion; Ōta’s team fine-tuned art and compositing shot by shot so brushwork wouldn’t clash with cleaner character linework. The result is a house-wide flex on craft rather than a star-director vanity project.

Premiering July 5 on Japanese TV and exclusive worldwide on Netflix, Sparks of Tomorrow adapts Hiro Yūki’s 20th Century Electricity Catalog into a story Ōta calls one of renewal — doubt and belief colliding as young inventors chase a lost catalog of electric dreams. For KyoAni watchers, the real signal is institutional: a studio still investing in in-house directors, shared workspaces, and original risk after years of careful recovery.
