In the slums on the outskirts of a wealthy city, Rudo lives with his foster father Regto, struggling to get by and frequently clashing with the rich who flaunt their opulence. Rudo nurses a deep hatred for the upper class and often scavenges through the town's trash for anything usable before it gets thrown into the dreaded Abyss—a massive pit used for dumping both garbage and unwanted people. His own biological father was cast into that same abyss after being falsely accused of murder. One evening, after encountering a mysterious stranger, Rudo returns home to find Regto dead on the ground. Authorities arrive quickly, find him at the scene, and charge him with murder without considering his claims of innocence. Condemned, Rudo is thrown into the Abyss, only to wake up in a bizarre, foul-smelling realm crawling with monstrous beings formed from refuse. Attacked by these creatures, Rudo is saved by a man named Enjin, who introduces himself as a Cleaner—a fighter wielding unique weapons called Vital Instruments. Driven by the desire to avenge Regto's death, Rudo reluctantly takes on the role of Cleaner, determined to fight his way out of the Abyss and return to the surface world.

Background

Gachiakuta was nominated for the 47th and 48th Kodansha Manga Awards in the Shounen category in 2023 and 2024. The series has been simulpub digitally in English through K Manga. The volumes have been published by Kodansha USA since January 16, 2024. It has also been released in German by Altraverse since April 17, 2023; and in Italian by Edizioni Star Comics since October 4, 2023.
