Revolutionary Girl Utena
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
少女革命ウテナ
Synopsis
Long ago, a young princess was left heartbroken after losing her parents. In her grief, a traveling prince visited her, offering solace. He dried her tears, gave her a ring adorned with a rose, and promised to meet her again. This encounter deeply influenced the princess, Utena Tenjou, motivating her to aspire to become a prince. Utena later attends Ootori Academy, where she spots the same rose symbol on her cherished ring. Following the fragrance of roses, she encounters Anthy Himemiya tending to them, alongside Student Council President Touga Kiryuu and Vice President Kyouichi Saionji, who seem to be in dispute over Anthy. Although Utena pays little attention initially, the Student Council convenes shortly afterward to address an important issue. A miscommunication leads Utena to join the ranks of the Duelists, individuals who bear rings like hers. The Duelists engage in battles for control over the Rose Bride, Anthy Himemiya, who is believed to possess significant power. Driven by her desire to prove herself as a genuine prince and angered by Anthy’s mistreatment and objectification, Utena decides to challenge the Duelists and rescue her from her unfortunate situation.
Background
Childhood idealism, illusions, ambition, adulthood, sexuality, abuse, incest and identity are all prominent themes which are explored in what is essentially a highly metaphorical and symbolic coming-of-age story. Loss of innocence, both sexual and otherwise, is treated as a life changing event. Fairy tale archetypes such as the noble prince and the damsel in distress, as well as standard tropes of the shoujo and magical girl genre are incorporated, subverted, inverted, averted and deconstructed. Shoujo Kakumei Utena won the Best TV Animation Award at Animation Kobe in 1997.
