In August of 20xx, a mysterious portal called the "Gate" suddenly materializes in Tokyo's Ginza district, releasing creatures and soldiers that turn the bustling shopping area into a battlefield. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force swiftly responds, pushing back the invaders through the Gate. To prepare for possible future conflicts and open dialogue, the JSDF sends the Third Reconnaissance Team into what is later named the "Special Region." Leading the team is Youji Itami, a 33-year-old JSDF officer and self-proclaimed otaku. Facing relentless attacks from hostile forces, the team explores various locations, gaining extensive knowledge of the region's geography and culture. Despite occasional obstacles, they carry out humanitarian missions that help build connections with the local population. Their growing circle of allies includes a cute elf, a sorceress, and a demigoddess. Meanwhile, major powers like the United States, China, and Russia take notice of the Special Region's abundant resources and exert diplomatic pressure on Japan. For these global superpowers, the Gate may be seen as a tool to disrupt the existing world order. But for the team members, it represents a valuable chance to gain new knowledge, form friendships, and expand their horizons.

Background

Gate was initially serialized online on the novel contribution site Arcadia between 2006 and 2009. In 2010, it was published by Alphapolis in a hard-cover edition with cover illustrations by Daisuke Izuka. Compared to the online serialization, this edition placed lesser weight on political commentary. The third volume was substantially rewritten and contained a different ending. Between 2012 and 2013, the series was re-published in a 10-volume paperback edition with illustrations done by Kurojishi.
