Long ago, there were individuals blessed with divine power. Their task was to eradicate the malevolent beings called "Akuma" that hide in the shadows. Under the command of the Milenium Earl, these Akuma seek to destroy fragments of "Innocence"—the only weapons capable of harming the Earl and his forces—and trigger the Great Flood that occurred a century ago. To avert this catastrophe, the Black Order was established as an organization dedicated to opposing the Earl. They enlist Exorcists—people who can naturally synchronize with Innocence—to battle the Akuma. During the late 1800s, Allen Walker, a white-haired youth whose Innocence manifests as his entire left arm and whose cursed eye allows him to perceive Akuma, is dispatched to the Black Order. There, he encounters various comrades within the Order: the volatile Yuu Kanda, the compassionate Lenalee Lee, and the cheerful yet enigmatic Lavi. Though their personalities differ, they share a single objective: to rescue the souls of Akuma and stop the Earl from annihilating the world.

D.Gray-man has been published in English by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump Advanced imprint since May 2, 2006 and in 3-in-1 omnibus editions since July 2, 2013. It has been also published in Spanish, first the first 23 volumes by Glénat until August 2012, when Shueisha broke the contract with Glénat, and then by Ivrea since July 2013, re-editing the first 23 volumes and simultaneously publishing new volumes; and in Italian by Panini Comics under the Planet Manga imprint since July 20, 2006.
