In a world where plant seeds are cultivated for specialized purposes—such as igniting fires instantly, producing rope-like materials, or sending signals across distances—rare seeds are highly valued. To maintain economic and political stability, the National Grainelier Special Education and Research Institute holds exclusive rights to grow and study seeds, while also policing the use of seeds that can be consumed by humans. Consuming these seeds transforms people into "carriers," making them more plant-like than human and granting them dangerous abilities. After the death of his mother, Luca Anglade lives alone with his reclusive father Christophe. Both father and son illegally grow seeds, but while Luca sells his seeds to cover their living expenses, the purpose of Christophe's experiments remains unknown. One night, a Grainelier security team arrives and tries to arrest Christophe. He orders Luca to swallow a handful of seeds and flee, but Luca barely manages to get a safe distance before losing consciousness. When he wakes, he finds himself at the home of his childhood friend, Abel Guivarch, who tells him that two years have passed—yet Luca appears not to have aged a day since that night.

Background

Graineliers has been published in English by Yen Press since December 19, 2017. As of August 18, 2019, this series has been put on indefinite hiatus by the mangaka.
