The story takes place across two separate worlds that are supposed to stay divided: the human realm, specifically Tokyo's Shibuya district, and the bakemono realm, known as Shibutenmachi. In these different domains, a lonely boy and a lonely bakemono live their lives. One day, the boy accidentally wanders into the bakemono world, where he becomes a student of the bakemono named Kumatetsu and is given the new name Kyuuta.
