Across the world, vile creatures called phantoms drain the life force from humans, and only magical girls can defeat them. However, one being defies this conflict between good and evil: the shadow phantom Shade, who has protected 16-year-old Tanpopo Ohanami from other phantoms and her own mistakes since childhood. One day at school, Tanpopo is summoned by the special anti-phantom organization Butterfly, which oversees magical girls. They believe Tanpopo has great potential to become a powerful magical girl, but Shade warns her that if she does, they will become enemies. Tanpopo has only ever wanted to fight alongside her most trusted friend—but when she accidentally awakens her powers, she discovers that the truth behind both phantoms and magical girls is far different from the reality she once knew.
