In Noragami, Yato is a minor deity with no followers who scrapes by doing odd jobs for five yen, hoping one day to afford his own shrine. His situation worsens when his Shinki, his weapon companion, leaves due to their dire circumstances. Without a weapon, Yato continues taking odd jobs while searching for a new Shinki. While hired to find a missing cat, Yato gets into danger chasing it and is saved by a girl named Hiyori Iki, who pushes him out of the way but ends up injured herself. In the hospital, Hiyori discovers her soul has become separated from her body because of the accident. Feeling responsible, Yato vows to help fix her condition—all for five yen. To do so, he must acquire a new Shinki, which turns out to be the defiant spirit Yukine. The series follows a young woman navigating life between the spiritual and physical realms, and a forgotten god trying to find his place in the world.
