In "Golden Kamuy," Saichi Sugimoto, who earned the nickname "Immortal Sugimoto" for his ferocious fighting in the Russo-Japanese War, is not celebrated as a genuine war hero. After being discharged for nearly killing a superior officer, Sugimoto wanders the dangerous landscapes of Hokkaido seeking gold to fulfill a promise made to a deceased comrade. For a long stretch, his search yields nothing until a mysterious figure reveals a story that could alter his fortunes. The legend says a thief stole gold belonging to the Ainu people and hid it; to find its location, one must assemble a map made from the tattooed skin of escaped prisoners. When Sugimoto meets Asirpa, a young Ainu girl, he embarks on a mission to track down these marked fugitives. His path is filled with danger, as other soldiers and mercenaries also pursue the valuable treasure. With Asirpa's knowledge of the area, they start a quest driven by revenge, violence, and greed, aiming to reclaim the stolen Ainu wealth.

Golden Kamuy won the ninth Manga Taisho Award in 2016. The series ranked in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division in 2016, 2018, and 2023. The series was published in English by VIZ Media under the VIZ Signature imprint from June 20, 2017, to January 16, 2024. It has also been released in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones since May 24, 2017. The manga was adapted into a Japanese live-action movie that was released on January 19, 2024.
