Set in 16th-century Japan, Shinmen Takezou is a young man whose wild and aggressive nature makes him feared and disliked by his village. Together with his best friend Matahachi Honiden, Takezou leaves home seeking a greater destiny and joins the Toyotomi army, hoping for fame and glory. However, after the Toyotomi forces suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Tokugawa Clan during the Battle of Sekigahara, the two barely escape and go their separate ways. Returning home, Shinmen sets out on a personal mission to inform the Hon'iden family that Matahachi is still alive. Instead, he finds himself falsely accused of murder because of his violent past and is captured, tied to a tree to die. A compassionate monk named Takuan Soho rescues Shinmen and gives him a new identity—Musashi Miyamoto—to avoid the law. "Vagabond" is a fictional narrative of Musashi Miyamoto, Japan's legendary swordsman known as the "Sword Saint." The story follows his transformation from a directionless swordsman seeking to be "Invincible Under the Heavens" into a wise warrior who comes to understand the value of close friendships, introspection, and the essence of life.
