In Trigun Maximum, much of the chaos tied to Vash comes from bounty hunters chasing the enormous sixty-billion-double-dollar reward on his head for destroying the city of July. Despite his reputation, Vash has no memory of that event and keeps insisting on "love and peace." While he has incredible gunfighting skills, he only uses them defensively to protect lives whenever possible. The story reveals more layers of Vash's mysterious past and the broader history of human society on the barren world of Gunsmoke. The series balances humor with deep character growth and emotional weight, especially as the plot moves forward. Vash often travels with Nicholas D. Wolfwood, a priest whose shooting ability matches Vash's, and who later faces threats from the assassin group called the Gung-Ho Guns, whose intentions are unclear at first. Trigun Maximum explores moral questions deeply, challenging the very idea of morality. It asks whether different ethical systems can be compared and what happens when someone breaks their own moral code. The series looks at whether a person can redeem themselves after committing wrongs and how that path to redemption might work.

Trigun Maximum won the 40th Seiun Award in the Best Comic category in 2009. The series was published in English by Dark Horse Comics from May 26, 2004, to April 8, 2009. The publisher later collected the series in five omnibus volumes.
