In *Ginga Tetsudou 999*, Tetsurou Hoshino, a poor young boy, longs to trade his human body for an immortal android one, granting him eternal life and the freedoms androids possess. Such a transformation is normally extremely expensive, but rumors suggest that riding the Galaxy Express to its final stop in the Andromeda Galaxy can grant this body for free. After his mother is tragically killed by the Android Count, Tetsurou sees no reason to stay on his home planet and is further driven by a desire for revenge. Determined to pursue both his dream and his quest for vengeance, he seeks a way to board the legendary train. His path crosses with Maetel, a mysterious woman who gives him a ticket to the Galaxy Express, on the condition that he travels with her. Together, they embark on a journey that introduces them to a series of bizarre planets, each offering Tetsurou a deeper understanding of humanity, human behavior, and the concept of immortality. During their travels, Tetsurou and Maetel encounter notable characters like Emeraldas and Harlock.
