In the ongoing conflict between the imperial nation of Koukoku and the Empire of Teikoku, Shinjou Naoe, a First Lieutenant in the Koukoku military, is drawn into a fierce and desperate war. After Teikoku's Eastern Division launches a surprise assault and annihilates Koukoku's Northern Defense Forces, Shinjou and their battalion of 600 soldiers are ordered to undertake a rear-guard mission, intended to slow the advance of Teikoku's overwhelming force of 40,000 troops.

Background

Koukoku no Shugosha is an adaptation of Satou Daisuke's alternate-history war novels by the same title. Two times in a row, in 2005 and 2006, the manga series was chosen as Jury Recommended Work at the 9th and 10th Japanese Media Arts Awards Festival in manga division. It was also one of nominee works for the 1st Manga Taisho Award in 2008.
