Set in contemporary South Korea, the story takes place against the backdrop of a catastrophic event that occurred roughly thirty years prior. Unidentified entities, called "Trouble," suddenly appeared and caused widespread destruction, spreading chaos across the globe. At the same time, a portion of humanity developed or was born with supernatural abilities, known as "Trace." These individuals are the only ones capable of defending against the "Trouble," but they are often marginalized and viewed with suspicion because some have used their powers for selfish purposes. The narrative centers on two main characters. Sah Gang-kwon, a high school student and a natural-born "Trace," works to keep his unique abilities hidden from others. The second protagonist is Kim Yun-Seong, who only gained his "Trace" powers in his early thirties. Tragically, shortly after he acquired these abilities, his family—his wife and daughter—were kidnapped for experimental research.

Background

Trace is originally a webtoon series; 8 volumes were published by Cine21 Books (씨네21북스) from April 22, 2008 to March 30, 2012. A revised version with updated artwork was released as Trace Remaster (트레이스 리마스터) on KakaoPage for 131 chapters from May 25, 2021 to July 16, 2022; it was published in book format by artePOP (아르테팝) on May 9, 2024. The original webtoon was published digitally in English by SpotToon and Tapas Media. The remastered version was published digitally in English by Tapas Media as the first part of Trace from December 6, 2021 to January 15, 2024.
