Uchuu Kyoudai

In the summer of 2006, the Nanba brothers—Mutta and Hibito—witnessed a mysterious object in the sky, inspiring a pact between them. Hibito declared his ambition to become an astronaut and walk on the Moon, while Mutta, believing a big brother must always lead, vowed to go to Mars. By 2025, Hibito has become a NASA employee, on track to be the first Japanese person on the Moon. Meanwhile, Mutta finds himself unemployed after being dismissed from his position at an auto development firm. As he struggles to secure new employment, Mutta receives a transformative letter from JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, informing him that he has been selected for the upcoming round of astronaut candidates. Seeing this as a pivotal opportunity to fulfill his earlier promise, Mutta commits to the challenging journey toward space travel.

Background

Uchuu Kyoudai was nominated for the second and third Manga Taisho Awards in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, the series won the 56th Shogakukan Manga Award, along with Yamikin Ushijima-kun. In the same year, it also won the 35th Kodansha Manga Award in the General category, along with 3-gatsu no Lion. The series also won the Reader Award of the 18th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2014. The series has been simulpub digitally in English as Space Brothers through K Manga. Kodansha USA has been releasing the series digitally since November 3, 2015.
