Fujiwara, Takumi
Summary
Takumi Fujiwara is an eighteen-year-old driver who turns nineteen during the Project D arc. He pilots a high-tech two-tone Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (AE86) and has a fondness for green seasons, the rear end of his AE86, and naps. He dislikes showoffs, losing, and girls who flirt. As the son of Bunta Fujiwara, who owns a tofu shop in their hometown of Akina, Takumi is a young man who rarely displays emotion. His best friend is Itsuki Takeuchi, a dedicated racing fan. Together with Iketani, a member of the local Akina Speed Stars racing team, Takumi works part-time at a gas station. Initially, both Itsuki and Iketani believe Takumi lacks driving ability due to his apparent disinterest in cars and racing. The gas station owner, Yuuichi, is the first to suspect that Takumi possesses advanced driving skills. This suspicion arises during an episode where Takumi discusses drifting techniques with Iketani and Itsuki. In reality, Takumi has far more experience on the touge than his peers, having driven his father’s AE86 Trueno for five years since he was thirteen years old. For five years, he has delivered tofu to a hotel at 4 a.m. every day. Bunta subtly manipulated Takumi into developing these skills without Takumi fully understanding his father’s intentions. Aside from Bunta, Takumi’s driving technique is considered the best on Akina. His ability to win races against far more powerful cars with his AE86 Trueno serves as testament to his skills. Through constant daily practice and over five years of experience, Takumi can adapt to nearly any racing situation with astonishing speed. A key factor in his unparalleled abilities is his capacity to visualize the road in his mind, compensating for poor visibility on dark mountain passes. He is an instinctive driver rather than an intellectual one. Although the mizutoshi technique, taught by his father, is difficult, it has led him to many victories throughout the story. Although Takumi appears docile and weak-minded, he is actually stubborn and strong-willed, a trait noted by many observers. Yuuichi recognized that Takumi’s behavior mirrored that of his father. To those who have raced against him, Takumi exhibits tremendous concentration and instinctive insight behind the wheel, particularly when chasing an opponent. His apparent docility often serves as a trap for his competitors.
