In the lore of Akina Pass, a mysterious driver known as the "Ghost of Akina" holds the fastest recorded time descending the steep mountain road. The driver of the white Toyota AE86 remains unidentified, but the car is regularly seen making deliveries to a hotel at the peak each morning. Takumi Fujiwara, unlike his peers, shows no interest in automobiles. For him, cars are only linked to his daily task of delivering tofu for his father. Racing does not appeal to him, and he knows nothing about its customs or rules. However, when he joins a nighttime gathering and a rival racing team arrives at Akina Pass, Takumi is forced to drive his father's AE86 and engage in a downhill race against them. This spontaneous act launches Takumi on a high-octane journey, transforming him from a simple deliveryman into a potential master of drift racing. As he progresses, he gradually discovers and develops his hidden passion for street racing while facing numerous challengers, all aiming to dethrone the enigmatic Ghost of Akina.

Background

Initial D was partially published in English by Tokyopop, who published the first 33 volumes from May 21, 2002 to January 13, 2009. In 2019, Kodansha USA released all 48 volumes in English digitally, and in print as 2-in-1 omnibus volumes since March 19, 2024. The series has also been published in French by Asuka Comics. The manga has received multiple video game adaptations as well as a live-action film based on the events of the story. Released in 2005 in various Asian countries, the film won several awards at the 42nd Golden Horse Awards and the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
