Jigen, Daisuke

Summary

Daisuke Jigen is a smooth-talking gunman who frequently accompanies Lupin on his heists. Although he harbors a dislike for Lupin’s womanizing, he remains a loyal and reliable marksman. Jigen can perform a quick-draw in 0.3 seconds and boasts amazing accuracy. He prefers to hide his eyes with his hat, which adds to his enigmatic aura and aids in target acquisition. He is proficient with various firearms, including machine guns, sniper rifles, and a PTRS anti-tank rifle, and is also a skilled driver and pilot. While the original manga depicts him lurking in the background, the anime shows him as an extremely loyal partner ready for any caper. Jigen has a quick temper and often repays insults with violence, having struck both Lupin and Goemon for their frank criticisms. Beneath his gruff exterior, he possesses an ironic sense of humor and genuinely enjoys the group's adventures. He is the most pragmatic member, with a cynical streak stemming from failed romances, as his love interests often betray or kill him. He distrusts Fujiko Mine and is irritated when Lupin follows her plans. Jigen is the least hesitant to take human life among the group, viewing the killing of women and children as taboo but willing to eliminate any gender or age that poses a threat, such as Linda in Part 2 Episode 26. Unlike Lupin and Goemon Ishikawa XIII, who have unique styles, Jigen prefers basics. His typical attire includes a dark suit, dress shirt, black tie, and his prized dark grey or black broad-brimmed fedora. During the third anime series, his outfit featured lighter colors and a cross-hatched hatband, though black remains common for OVAs and TV specials. He has collar-length thick hair and an unruly chin curtain beard. Occasionally, anime episodes show his face obscured by his hat or hair, though this is rare. As the "big brother" of the group, Jigen acts as the voice of reason against Lupin’s impulsiveness, driven by friendship and professionalism. He has resigned himself to joining the craziest schemes and is adept with disguises and piloting any motorized vehicle, even a NASA Space Shuttle. He is also a tough hand-to-hand combatant capable of knocking out an attacker in one blow. His racial origins are unclear, but he was once a famed bodyguard and assassin for American criminal mobs. The most popular theory suggests he is an American mobster who moved to Japan on the lam, adopting the name Jigen, which is the Japanese word for dimension. Jigen’s hobbies are limited due to his homebody nature, but he enjoys target practice, visiting bars, playing poker, watching boxing, and eating at chop house-style restaurants. He has a weakness for Spaghetti Westerns, lounging, classical music, and hearty American food. Smoking is his most obvious pastime, usually involving a bent cigarette of Pall Mall Filter Longs or Marlboro Red, though he occasionally smokes a briar pipe. He also enjoys scotch, bourbon, vodka, beer, and fine wines, possessing a heavy resistance to intoxication. The Tokyo Pop releases note that Jigen’s appearance and temperament are based on James Coburn, particularly his role as Britt in The Magnificent Seven, a fact confirmed by creator Monkey Punch. Monkey Punch also stated that the Jigen/Lupin relationship was inspired by Alain Delon and Charles Bronson’s pairing in the 1968 film Adieu l'ami.
