Pikachu

Summary

Pikachu is a compact, rodent-like Pokémon characterized by its yellow fur and two horizontal brown stripes along its back. It features small brown eyes, long pointed ears with black tips, and short forearms with five-fingered paws. Its most distinctive features are the red circular pouches on its cheeks, which store electricity, and a lightning bolt-shaped tail with a brown patch at the base. Female Pikachu have a V-shaped notch at the tip of their tail, resembling a heart. While typically a quadruped, Pikachu can stand and walk on its hind legs, making it a facultative biped. The cheek pouches charge with electricity while Pikachu sleeps, allowing it to release shocks if threatened or touched. If insufficiently rested, its electric output is diminished. When angered, Pikachu discharges energy equivalent to a lightning bolt, a sign of wariness that causes stress if suppressed. In Sparks Fly for Magnemite (EP030), Pikachu is shown accumulating energy in glands to avoid complications. Groups of Pikachu can trigger thunderstorms, and individuals can revive weakened peers via electric shock. In Alola, plans were announced to harness Pikachu electricity for power plants. Soft, stretchy cheek sacs indicate high power generation. As seen in Pokémon Sleep, Pikachu may emit electricity while dreaming. Personality-wise, Pikachu is curious, playful, and intelligent. It primarily eats fruits and uses its electricity to roast Berries, though it often burns them by accident due to underestimating its charge. The Electric Tale of Pikachu depicts it eating telephone poles and wires. Pikachu raises its tail to survey surroundings and bites if pulled, sometimes attracting lightning. Wild Pikachu live in dangerous, lightning-prone forests in nests, greeting each other by touching tails to exchange electricity. Alolan Pikachu greet by sniffing and rubbing tails, as seen in A Plethora of Pikachu! (SM091). While considered rare in the Pokémon Adventures manga, Pikachu is common elsewhere. Many Trainers prefer Pikachu’s cuteness over Raichu’s, leading to Raichu’s scarcity. To appear less intimidating and make friends, a lonely Pokémon dresses in a Pikachu costume, though this backfires. Occasionally, Pikachu is unintentionally swallowed by and must escape when startled. Pikachu, Pichu, and Raichu are related to . Pikachu has sixteen additional forms across four groups: Cosplay Pikachu, Pikachu in a cap, Partner Pikachu, and Gigantamax Pikachu. Cosplay Pikachu is always female, has a black heart-shaped tail spot, and wears one of five Contest outfits. Pikachu in a cap is always male, comes in eight variants wearing Ash’s hats, and is the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt, though it cannot use Catastropika or Gigantamax. The Partner Pikachu, starter of Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!, has higher base stats and learns exclusive moves like Zippy Zap, Floaty Fall, and Splishy Splash, along with the Partner Power Pika Papow. It is indistinguishable in the Pokédex and cannot be transferred. Gigantamax Pikachu becomes larger and chubbier, with a longer tail that glows bright yellow and stores all generated electricity, surrounded by three red clouds. Its power rivals a power plant, but it can only maintain this form briefly. Mr. Windychu and Mrs. Wavychu, resembling tanned Pikachu in specific clothing, will appear in Pokémon Winds and Waves respectively. Pikachu evolves from and evolves into . In Alola, it evolves into Alolan Raichu. Cosplay Pikachu, Pikachu in a cap, Partner Pikachu, and Gigantamax Pikachu cannot evolve.
