Summary

Maetel is the enigmatic figure who grants young Tetsurou his ticket to board the Galaxy Express 999. Possessing both beauty and wisdom, she offers unwavering support and guidance to Tetsurou during his journey. While she maintains a calm and caring demeanor, she harbors mysterious motives and shows no hesitation in defending herself or those under her protection from harm. She deeply admires genuine courage and passion, viewing bravado, arrogance, and anger as self-destructive. Consequently, she opposes actions driven solely by self-preservation and encourages Tetsuro Hoshino and others to view the world through a more insightful lens. In her youth, Maetel rejected her mother’s plan to turn every inhabitant of La Metal into androids, believing in true strength. However, she was naive at the time, eager to reconnect with her mother despite Emeraldas’s objections. Through her numerous encounters and battles with Emeraldas, Captain Harlock, and Tochiro Oyama, she evolved into a hardened yet compassionate individual. She now seeks to help people achieve an enlightenment that transcends established norms. According to Leiji Matsumoto, Maetel travels with the dreams of adolescent boys, having accompanied millions of them. Because there are as many Maetels as there are boys, she can appear in any story, acting as a catalyst for characters like Antares, Emeraldas, and Harlock. Her presence represents a mental journey or a train ride through one’s mind, where each person experiences a unique path.
