Summary

Joe Shimamura, known as 009 in the Japanese version, is a half-Japanese delinquent from Japan who escaped juvenile detention before being captured by Black Ghost. His backstory varies across adaptations; in the 2001 anime, he was an orphan raised by a Catholic priest in Kanazawa alongside street friends including Mary Onodera, Shin'ichi Ibaraki, and Masaru Oyamada. After his mentor was murdered by Black Ghost members using children as guinea pigs for the Cyborg project, Joe was falsely blamed, captured, and transformed. Conversely, the 1960s films depict him as a famous racer nicknamed Hurricane Joe who was recovered by the organization following a crash. His primary ability is extreme speed, derived from an advanced version of 002’s acceleration module, which is activated by a switch in his teeth. This power makes the world appear static but prevents him from touching normal creatures like humans, as the air friction would cause fatal injury. Visually, he is defined by his spiked hair, with a large lock covering one eye. He serves as the leader of the 009 Cyborgs. His relationship with 003 (Françoise Arnoul) is central, featuring explicit romance in the manga and earlier series, while remaining implied in the 2001 adaptation. He also attracts interest from other women, such as Lady Tamara, Helen the Pu'Awak princess, Princess Ishuki, and potentially Artemis, though the latter’s connection may be non-romantic.
