During winter break, strange events occur at Reien Girls' Academy. Azaka Kokutou, a student and apprentice mage, is sent by her master to investigate. She discovers another mage is using fairies to steal students' memories. These fairies are invisible to Azaka but visible to Shiki Ryougi, an acquaintance with exceptional eyesight, so Shiki is brought in to assist. Despite initial friction between them caused by Azaka seeing Shiki as a romantic rival, the fairy situation worsens, revealing deeper layers to the mystery. Azaka must set aside her personal feelings and work with Shiki to save their fellow students.

By February 1999, a wave of murders has Shiki Ryougi and Mikiya Kokutou on edge. The killings bear a disturbing resemblance to the homicides of 1995, when Shiki and Mikiya first met, and stir up a dark, murderous craving that has remained buried within Shiki ever since. Falling under suspicion due to her connection to the earlier deaths and her likeness to the perpetrator, Shiki and Mikiya set out to track down the real culprit. As they pursue their own separate lines of inquiry, Mikiya's worry for Shiki deepens, and he rushes to find the responsible party before Shiki's own impulses can consume her. Armed with a clue from his cousin, police investigator Daisuke Akimi, Mikiya descends into the seedy depths of Mifune City, where the fate of Shiki's soul rests on his resolve to prove her innocence once and for all.
