Synopsis
In 2024, a terrorist incident known as the Laughing Man Incident took place, during which Ernest Serano, the head of the pioneering micromachine firm Sereno Genomics, was abducted and held for ransom. Six years later, with the case still unresolved, Detective Yamaguchi—who has been looking into the Laughing Man Incident—requests a meeting with Togusa of Public Safety Section 9. Not long after sending that message, however, Yamaguchi, a key figure in solving the case, dies in an accident. Several days pass, and during a police interview relay concerning suspicions about interceptors, a warning arrives from the Laughing Man announcing his next crime. The formless hacker begins to stir once more.
