Tachikoma

Summary

The Tachikoma are artificial intelligence-driven combat vehicles within the Ghost in the Shell universe, appearing exclusively in the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex sub-universe. Described as spider-like multi-legged combat machines, they function as both personnel transports and mobile weapon platforms. Resembling a small car in size, they are colored middle-blue and feature four expressive eyes—three on the head and one under the abdomen—each with pinholes likely used for triangulation. Their facial expressions often shift into typical anime styles. Controlled by individual AIs, Tachikoma can speak and display childish, curious, and joyful personalities, acting as consummate professionals in the field. They usually operate independently under human orders but can be piloted directly from an abdominal cockpit. Equipped with four legs and two arms, they move by walking or driving at high speeds using omnidirectional wheeled footpads. This holonomic drive system allows movement in any direction and appears to be street-legal. Additional capabilities include high jumping, adhering to vertical or inverted surfaces, activating thermoptic camouflage, and using adhesive string launchers for grappling. Their movements, modeled after jumping spiders, involve shifting weight during turns and balancing heavy abdomens via ball joints. These physical feats are prominently displayed in Episode 2 of Stand Alone Complex, titled "Runaway Evidence - Testation." Standard equipment includes a 7.62x51mm light machine gun in the right arm and a universal cybernetic connector on an extensible cable in the left arm. The snout typically houses a 50mm grenade launcher for explosives and gas, though it can be swapped for a six-barrelled 12.7x99mm Gatling gun. Their AI is notably childlike, providing comic relief in Stand Alone Complex. Although each possesses individual intelligence, they synchronize every night, starting the next day with identical consciousnesses derived from their collective experiences. This synchronization causes identity confusion, as all units share the same memories.
