Anime Like FLCL: Grunge

Naota Nandaba leads a thoroughly mundane life in a sleepy town where nothing ever happens. Since his older brother Tasuku moved to America to pursue his baseball dreams, Naota has assumed all of Tasuku's former responsibilities, including sleeping in his old bunk bed and dealing with his ex-girlfriend, Mamimi Samejima, who continues to visit frequently. However, Naota's boring existence is completely upended by the arrival of Haruko Haruhara. This eccentric pink-haired girl, who rides a Vespa and plays bass guitar, crashes into Naota's life, leaving tire marks on his back and causing a giant horn to sprout from his head during their initial encounter. Although Naota simply wishes for peace, Haruko's presence at his home triggers a series of events that thrust him into the center of an epic battle for control that could alter everything, not just on Earth, but potentially across the entire universe.

In FLCL Progressive, Hidomi Hibajiri leads a monotonous existence, defined by her constant use of headphones. Each day follows the same routine: school, helping out at her mother’s café, and losing herself in music. This pattern remains unbroken until a sudden encounter with a peculiar woman wielding a guitar changes everything. After their unexpected meeting, a robot invades Hidomi’s home in the dead of night, along with her classmate Ko Ide. They find themselves chased through the streets until the guitar-wielding woman intervenes. However, the incident leaves Hidomi with a horn protruding from her forehead. Confused about the origins of the robots, the warnings of the mysterious guitarist known as the "vespa woman," and the new appendage on her head, Hidomi realizes she can no longer escape reality through her music.

Kana Koumoto experiences her everyday life in a quiet Japanese town as unremarkable, with each day flowing into the next without any hint of change. She occupies herself with school, spending time with her friends, painting her nails, and listening to music, yet a feeling of monotony lingers. Seeking some excitement, Kana and her friends attempt to build a bottle rocket, aiming to launch it into space despite the low probability of success. But their plans are suddenly disrupted when a robot crashes into the rocket, destroying their project. A mysterious woman with pink hair then appears, introducing herself as a "Galactic Investigator." With her arrival, Kana's life takes unexpected turns, bringing forth intense emotions, shifting relationships, and unforeseen romantic complications. As life moves quickly, leaving moments unnoticed, why do these strange robots always have to show up at the most inconvenient times?

This is the fifth season of FLCL and the direct follow-up to FLCL: Grunge. The story is set ten years after FLCL Alternative and revolves around a high school boy and girl. Masaki, who struggles to fit in with his classmates because of his unusual upbringing and personality, meets Harumi—a girl even more eccentric than he is. She offers to ease his worries by blowing up the Tsuganei Tower.

By the year 2010, the sprawling galactic corporation Catty & Co. has taken over nearly the entire economy of Cat Earth. Living on this world is Tamala, a beautiful but foul-mouthed cat who sets out for Orion, the place of her birth. After making an emergency landing on planet Q, she encounters Michaelangelo, whom she dubs "MoiMoi." The two explore the capital city, Hate City, currently under martial law because of ongoing conflicts between cats and dogs. They come across graffiti and museum exhibits hinting at the ancient Minerva cult, pointing to a dark hidden secret. When the aggressive biker Kentauros grows fixated on Tamala, she and Michaelangelo escape, yet questions about her past remain unresolved: why did Tamala originally leave Orion, and what is her link to Catty & Co.?

The Yomota family is made up of an average household: father Kinekuni (42), mother Tamiko (38), and their son Inumaru (17). One day, a stunning girl named "Maroko Yomota" arrives at their doorstep, claiming to be Inumaru's granddaughter from the future who traveled back in time to visit her ancestors. While Tamiko strongly objects, Kinekuni and Inumaru agree to let Maroko stay, which gradually leads to the unraveling of their once peaceful family life.

Fifteen years following the devastating Second Impact, humanity faces relentless assaults from colossal entities known as Angels targeting Tokyo-3. Conventional military might proves futile against these foes, leaving survival in the hands of NERV, a clandestine group commanded by the stern Gendou Ikari. NERV deploys giant humanoid mechs called Evangelions, armed with advanced weaponry and shielded by Absolute Terror Fields, to combat the Angels. Shinji Ikari, a fourteen-year-old, returns to Tokyo-3 after years of abandonment by his father. Haunted by the loss of his mother and his father's icy demeanor, Shinji fears forming attachments. His world shifts upon meeting Misato Katsuragi, a twenty-nine-year-old high-ranking NERV officer who offers the warmth and care he has long lacked. An abrupt Angel incursion compels Shinji to act, exposing Gendou's true motive for summoning him: Shinji possesses the unique ability to synchronize with Evangelion Unit-01, a robot that responds to his biological signals. Despite the severe psychological strain of piloting an Evangelion, Shinji becomes Tokyo-3's guardian against the angelic threat, oblivious to his father's concealed agenda.

In Edo, a city where samurai once thrived with courage and ambition, the arrival of the powerful alien race known as the Amanto shattered those dreams. The former shogunate now operates under foreign rule, and a new law prohibits carrying swords in public. Gintoki Sakata, a peculiar man with silver hair and a habit of carrying a wooden sword, continues to live as a samurai despite the ban. As the leader of Yorozuya, a small business that takes on odd jobs, he often sets out on missions to help others, though his methods are unusual and frequently chaotic. Alongside Shinpachi Shimura, a bespectacled youth training to be a samurai, Kagura, a strong and gluttonous tomboy, and Sadaharu, their enormous pet dog who likes to bite heads, the Yorozuya navigate the many challenges posed by the diverse residents of Edo, from alien nobility to local gang conflicts.

Following the loss of a close friend, Shinji Ikari descends into emotional paralysis, rendering him unable to pilot Evangelion Unit-01. Consequently, his father, Gendou Ikari of NERV, frantically maneuvers to outwit the clandestine organization SEELE, as both factions pursue their own apocalyptic objectives. SEELE intends to merge human souls into an Evangelion unit to forge a divine being, whereas Gendou schemes to revert humanity to a primal state so he can reunite with his late wife, Yui. SEELE initiates a military assault on NERV headquarters, resulting in the deaths of numerous NERV personnel. Asuka Langley Sohryu takes the controls of Evangelion Unit-02 to battle SEELE's overwhelming forces. Amidst erupting chaos and societal collapse, Captain Misato Katsuragi searches for Shinji, who remains concealed within NERV, holding the fate of the world in their hands.

Most people dismiss the existence of aliens, time travelers, and espers, and high school student Kyon is no different. However, his mundane outlook is shattered from the first day of school by Haruhi Suzumiya, a girl intent on reshaping his perception of reality. During class introductions, Haruhi explicitly states her disdain for ordinary life and her burning desire to encounter supernatural entities. Unable to find an existing club focused on the paranormal, she impulsively establishes the "Spreading FUN throughout the School with Haruhi Suzumiya Club," widely known as the SOS Brigade. Despite having little experience with technology, Lain opens the message and is drawn into the Wired, a digital network akin to the Internet. This event transforms her life as she confronts mysterious puzzles. Figures known as the Men in Black begin appearing around her, questioning her with intimate details about her life that even she does not fully grasp. As the boundaries between the physical world and cyberspace grow indistinct, Lain becomes entangled in increasingly surreal scenarios that challenge the nature of identity, consciousness, and reality. Directed by Chiaki J. Konaka, the creator behind Texhnolyze, this psychological and avant-garde mystery follows Lain's critical choices, which impact both the real world and the Wired. Only through Lain can the full significance of these interconnected realities be understood as one realm fades and another emerges.

Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura are back as the perpetually broke but cheerful members of the Yorozuya team. A pioneering research facility has developed the DC Mini, a groundbreaking tool enabling users to enter and navigate the dreams of others. Motivated by a desire to cure psychological trauma, Atsuko Chiba and Kosaku Tokita have devoted themselves to refining this revolutionary invention. However, the DC Mini's capacity to breach the subconscious harbors a terrifying risk; if misused, it can serve as a weapon for psychological sabotage, causing devastating mental anguish. When the device vanishes into unknown hands and those nearby start acting strangely, Atsuko and Kosaku grasp the severity of the crisis. Teaming up with Officer Konakawa, who has personally experienced this experimental therapy, they embark on a quest to identify the perpetrator, moving back and forth between the boundaries of reality and dreams.

Most unbelievable of all, his sister Otae has married the Shinsengumi commander and shameless stalker Isao Kondou and is expecting their first child. Bewildered, Shinpachi agrees to join the Shinsengumi at Otae and Kondou's request and finds even more startling transformations happening both within and outside the organization's ranks. However, upon discovering that Vice Commander Toushirou Hijikata has remained unchanged, Shinpachi and his unlikely Shinsengumi ally set out to restore the city of Edo to the way they remember it. Packed with even more dirty jokes, tongue-in-cheek parodies, and shameless references, Gintama' follows the Yorozuya team through further misadventures in the lively, alien-filled world of Edo.

In a society where personal computers called Persocoms closely resemble humans, the true nature of love is put to the test. Hideki Motosuwa, a young man from the countryside trying to pass his college entrance exams, struggles to make ends meet, making it impossible for him to afford the latest technology: Persocoms, which are humanoid computers. One night, on his way home, he stumbles upon an abandoned Persocom and decides to bring her to his apartment. When he activates her, she responds with only a single word, "Chii," which becomes her name. Unlike other Persocoms, Chii cannot download information, forcing Hideki to manually teach her about life as he studies for his exams. With assistance from his friends, Hideki begins to investigate the mystery surrounding Chii, who might be a "Chobit"—a legendary type of Persocom rumored to possess genuine human emotions, thoughts, and the ability to love their owner. However, the potential for a romantic relationship between a Persocom and a human remains uncertain.

Since childhood, Tomoki Sakurai has been haunted by recurring nightmares of an angel. Concerned for him, his friend Sohara Mitsuki seeks the advice of Eishirou Sugata, an eccentric sky enthusiast. Eishirou suspects Tomoki's visions are connected to the New World, a baffling aerial phenomenon that has left researchers stumped. To investigate, the trio establishes the New World Discovery Club, and Eishirou organizes a special event to observe the skies. However, Tomoki's mundane existence is upended when a mysterious girl descends from the heavens and proclaims him her master. The narrative follows the daily exploits of the New World Discovery Club as they gradually piece together the truth regarding the Angeloids that have begun appearing on Earth.

Included as a special episode in the final volume of the nine Blu-ray/DVD releases, this story takes place a few months after the television series' conclusion on a quiet day in Akihabara. Okabe and the other lab members receive an invitation from Feyris to travel to America, while Mayuri and the rest make plans to reunite with Kurisu, who has returned to her laboratory in the United States. Several days later, Okabe's mad scientist alter ego, Hououin Kyouma, arrives alone at Los Angeles International Airport, where he may be taking his first step toward plunging the world into chaos.

A new semester starts, and Ichika remains unaware of the affections the girls hold for him. Everyone strives to improve their IS piloting skills, but a fresh danger emerges. The covert organization known as Phantom Task makes its move, stealing IS units from across the globe and targeting Byakushiki—while also seeking to settle a personal grudge.

In "To LOVE Ru Darkness," the already chaotic dynamic between the inhabitants of Planet Deviluke—led by its female royalty—and the humans of Earth, primarily focused on the perpetually exhausted Rito Yuuki, escalates to new heights. When Princesses Nana and Momo transfer to an Earth school under the watchful supervision of their older sister Lala, a fragile peace seems possible. Space Dandy is a stylish space hunter with a signature pompadour who travels the galaxy hunting down rare alien species to sell for profit. On his ship, the Aloha Oe, he is joined by two unusual companions: QT, a robot built from a vacuum cleaner, and Meow, an alien who looks like a cat.
