In the anime Kamisama Kiss, high schooler Nanami Momozono endures a crisis when her father vanishes, leaving her penniless and evicted from her home. In her despair, she intervenes to save a man from a dog attack. Grateful, the man offers her his residence, which is revealed to be a dilapidated shrine. Upon arriving, Nanami meets two shrine spirits and a fox named Tomoe, who mistake her for Mikage, the shrine's land deity. With Mikage nowhere to be found, Tomoe assumes Nanami is a replacement sent to take over and leaves in a huff.
Choosing this arrangement over homelessness, Nanami accepts her new role as a deity. To manage the shrine effectively, she needs Tomoe's help. Despite her initial clumsiness, Nanami succeeds in forming a contract with Tomoe following a string of mishaps. As they adjust to their roles as deity and familiar, new dangers arise, including a yokai seeking to devour Nanami and a snake yokai proposing marriage. Amidst these trials, Nanami starts to develop unexpected feelings for Tomoe, complicating their relationship.
