Tatsuhiro Satou, a college dropout who has been an unemployed hikikomori for four years, believes his predicament is the result of some kind of conspiracy. Just as he feels his life will never change, he encounters the mysterious girl Misaki Nakahara. She claims she can cure his social withdrawal. She proposes a contract, agreeing to meet every evening at a local park, where she will attempt to help him break free from his current lifestyle through lectures. During these meetings, they discuss various topics, mostly related to psychology or psychoanalysis.

NHK ni Youkoso! began as a web novel serialized on Boiled Eggs Online from January 29, 2001 to April 16, 2001, and was published in print by Kadokawa on January 28, 2002. The series was published in English as Welcome to the N.H.K. by Tokyopop on October 9, 2007, and in Italian by Edizioni BD under the J-Pop Romanzi imprint on November 17, 2011.
