In Shanaou Yoshitsune, the legendary figure Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his devoted retainers, especially Benkei, are given a fresh interpretation set during the Heian Era. In this version, Yoshitsune starts out as a frail, sickly child who encounters Hyouta, a savvy orphan who is his perfect double. Because Hyouta is much stronger, he swaps places with Yoshitsune and adopts his identity. The manga constructs a fictional tale filled with historical references, following Hyouta's quest disguised as Yoshitsune to restore the Genji Clan's former prestige.
