In "A Silent Voice," Shouya Ishida, a restless elementary school student, grows annoyed when Shouko Nishimiya, a deaf transfer student, joins his class. Despite Shouko’s sincere efforts to connect with others, she becomes a frequent target of ridicule from Shouya and his classmates, who relentlessly tease her while the teachers do nothing to intervene. The harassment persists until Shouko transfers to a different school, leaving Shouya to bear the full blame for the bullying. Ostracized by his peers, Shouya grows increasingly withdrawn and anxious as the years pass. Now in high school, Shouya encounters Shouko again after five years apart. Tormented by his past actions, he decides to seek redemption and confront his guilt, despite the difficult challenges that await him.

Background

Before Koe no Katachi was serialized, the Japanese Federation of the Deaf reviewed the publication due to its subject matter and endorsed the series. The manga ranked first in the 2015 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division; in the same year, it was nominated for the 19th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and later won the New Creator Prize. It was also nominated for the eighth Manga Taishou Award and the 38th Kodansha Manga Award in the best shounen category. The manga placed in the Top Ten of the Young Adult Library Services Association's 2016 and 2017 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list. The series was published in English by Kodansha Comics USA as A Silent Voice from May 26, 2015, to May 24, 2016, and later as a complete box set. Crunchyroll simultaneously published the series. The manga was published in French by Éditions Ki-oon; in Indonesian by m&c!; in Italian by Edizioni Star Comics; in Portuguese by NewPOP; in Russian by Istari Comics; and in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones.
