Synopsis
During his elementary school years, Shouya Ishida alleviated his own boredom by treating others poorly. When the deaf Shouko Nishimiya joins his class, Shouya and his classmates immediately begin to mistreat her. After Shouko's mother reports the bullying, the school designates Shouya as the scapegoat. Shouko eventually transfers to a different school, leaving Shouya ostracized and tormented by his peers throughout elementary and middle school, while teachers ignore the situation. In his final year of high school, Shouya continues to struggle with the guilt stemming from his childhood behavior. Desiring to make amends for his past mistakes, Shouya sets out to find Shouko and ask for her forgiveness. A Silent Voice follows Shouya's journey to reconcile with Shouko and his sincere efforts to atone for his past actions, even as the consequences of his earlier deeds continue to trouble him.
