Summary

Born on August 12 under the Leo sign, Shimura Shinpachi is a sixteen-year-old who ages to eighteen following the Silver Soul arc and reaches twenty-one or twenty-two by the time of Be Forever Yorozuya. Standing at 166 cm and weighing 55 kg, he resides at the Yorozuya agency ostensibly to learn the ways of the samurai under Gintoki, though his efforts seem more focused on helping pay the rent than actual martial arts training. He also serves as the captain of the Otsu's Imperial Guard, a fan club for a pop singer. Shinpachi first encountered Gintoki after being tripped by an ambassador from Planet Chatoran; Gintoki subsequently assaulted the ambassador and his guards not to defend Shinpachi, but to avenge a spilled parfait. Gintoki then framed Shinpachi for the incident, a chain of events that inadvertently led to the rescue of Shinpachi’s sister, Shimura Tae, from being sold into a brothel. Despite his unassuming demeanor, Shinpachi is a highly capable swordsman proficient in Kakidō-Ryu, the style taught at his family’s dōjo. His name draws inspiration from Shinsengumi member Nagakura Shinpachi and comedian Ken Shimura. In popularity polls, he has ranked eighth.
